Rice Papad/Pellet Products

In 2020, Zippy Edibles ventured into the ready-to-fry segment, starting with rice papad, known for its complex production process and rich flavors, distinct from traditional dal papad. Celebrated for their crispiness and melt-in-mouth quality, our rice papads introduced unique flavors to the market. Expanding our product range, we also embraced potato pellets, combining the distinct taste of potatoes with the convenience of ready-to-fry products, offering a novel alternative to conventional potato chips.

How It's Made

1

Flour Preparation & Mixing

Rice flour (or potato starch for pellets) is mixed with water, salt, and flavor ingredients. For flavored papads, fresh ajwain, jeera, green chilli, or tomato-garlic paste is added directly to the dough - not sprinkled on top.

2

Extrusion & Sheeting

The dough is extruded into sheets or tubes depending on the product. For papads, the extrudate is sheeted to uniform thickness. For pellets, it's shaped into tubes, spirals, or ring forms through specialized dies.

3

Cutting & Sizing

Sheets are cut into papad rounds in multiple sizes (1.5 inch, 3 inch, 5 inch, 7 inch). Pellets are cut to consistent lengths. Custom sizes and embossing patterns available for private label customers.

4

Controlled Drying

Products are dried in controlled-atmosphere dryers to achieve the exact moisture content needed for proper frying expansion. This step is critical - too dry and they crack, too moist and they don't puff properly.

5

Quality Check & Packaging

Every batch is tested for expansion ratio, texture after frying, moisture content, and flavor consistency. Automated VFFS packaging machines handle retail and bulk formats.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between rice papad and traditional dal papad?+
Rice papad is made from rice flour through an extrusion process, producing a lighter, crispier product with a melt-in-mouth quality. Traditional dal papad uses lentil flour and is hand-rolled or machine-pressed. Rice papad has a more neutral base flavor that pairs well with added spices, and the extrusion process gives it a distinctive texture when fried.
Can Zippy make custom-flavored papads?+
Yes. Our standard flavors include ajwain, jeera, green chilli, and tomato & garlic - all made with fresh ingredients mixed into the dough, not surface-sprinkled. We can develop custom flavor profiles for private label customers. We also offer custom sizes and embossing for branded products.
What sizes of papad are available?+
Standard sizes: 1.5 inch (snack/canape), 3 inch (appetizer), 5 inch (standard), and 7 inch (restaurant/family). Custom sizes are available for bulk orders. All sizes expand uniformly when fried due to our controlled drying process.
What are pellets and how are they used?+
Pellets are extruded snack bases made from potato starch or rice flour. They come in shapes like tubes, spirals, and rings, and expand when fried into crispy snacks. They are an alternative to traditional potato chips with lower oil absorption and longer shelf life in unfried form. Ideal for snack brands looking for ready-to-fry base products.
