Zippy Edibles makes fortified rice kernels (FRK) and fortified pulse kernels by extrusion at our FSSC 22000 certified Jaspur plant. Our FRK process (Indian Patent 415401) is adapted from pasta extrusion, with 25 MT/day FRK capacity. We supply FRK to rice millers, exporters and institutional suppliers, protein rice kernels to your recipe, and extruded pulse kernels for brands fortifying dal and pulse-grain staples. Fortified Rice & Pulses FAQ

What is Fortified Rice Kernel (FRK)?+

FRK is an extruded rice kernel enriched with micronutrients like iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12. It is blended with regular rice, typically 1 kg of kernels per 100 kg of rice. The kernels blend in and cook like regular rice.

What are fortified pulse kernels?+

Pulse kernels are extruded on the same platform as our FRK, to the brand's recipe. They can carry micronutrients (iron, folic acid, B12) or added protein and fibre inside the kernel. The blend ratio is set by the brand's recipe. Our pulse kernels already go into a consumer brand's products.

How is extruded fortification different from surface-coated pulses?+

Surface coating and powder blending put the nutrients on the outside of raw pulses. Extruded fortified kernels carry the fortification inside the kernel matrix, and they are made to cook at the same rate as regular pulses so they blend in. The same difference applies to extruded FRK and surface-coated rice.

How does Zippy's FRK manufacturing process work?+

We adapted our pasta extrusion technology for FRK production. Rice flour is mixed with micronutrient premix, extruded through rice-grain-shaped dies, steamed, and dried. The result is kernels that look like natural rice and carry their nutrients inside the kernel. Our FRK holds its shape in cooking.

What is high-protein rice?+

Our protein rice kernels are extruded to the brand's recipe into rice-shaped kernels. They cook like regular rice and can be blended in or used on their own.

Can Zippy fortify both micronutrients and macronutrients in the same kernel?+

Yes. We can formulate kernels (rice or pulse) that deliver FSSAI-spec micronutrients (iron, folic acid, B12) and simultaneously boost macros (protein, fiber) through choice of base and added protein isolates. Useful for brands building functional dal-chawal mixes, nutritionally upgraded khichdi products, or high-protein staple SKUs.

Can Zippy develop custom extruded formulations?+

Yes. Our pilot extruder handles custom formulation trials for both rice and pulse kernels. We can incorporate different protein sources, vitamins, minerals, or functional ingredients. Trial timeline: 2-3 weeks. Custom formulations typically go through 1-2 iteration cycles before committing to full production.

What is the typical MOQ?+

MOQ is 5 MT. For trials and new formulations, we run small pilot batches on request on our pilot extruder. Institutional orders are supplied in bulk.
